Thorfinn is a young Viking warrior who seeks revenge against Askeladd, the man who killed his father Thors in a duel. He follows Askeladd’s mercenary band, hoping to challenge him to a fair fight and honor his father’s death.

Thorfinn's Personality

Thorfinn is a determined, stubborn, reckless, and violent character who lives for the sole purpose of killing Askeladd. He does not care about anything else, not even his own well-being or happiness. He is willing to endure any hardship, pain, or humiliation to get his chance to face Askeladd. He has no interest in the wars, politics, or riches that Askeladd and his men are involved in. He only cares about his personal vendetta.
Thorfinn’s personality is shaped by his tragic past and his harsh environment. He was born in Iceland, where he lived a peaceful and happy life with his family. He admired his father Thors, who was a legendary warrior and a kind and wise man. Thors taught Thorfinn the value of life and the meaning of a true warrior. However, Thors was forced to join a war expedition to England by a Jomsviking leader named Floki, who wanted to eliminate him for betraying the Jomsvikings. Thors was betrayed by Askeladd, who was hired by Floki to kill him. Thorfinn witnessed his father’s death and swore to avenge him. He then joined Askeladd’s band as a slave and a fighter, hoping to earn his right to duel Askeladd.
Thorfinn’s personality is also influenced by his interactions with other characters. He has a rivalry with Bjorn, Askeladd’s second-in-command, who often mocks and provokes him. He has a friendship with Canute, the prince of Denmark, who he initially despises for being weak and cowardly, but later respects for his courage and vision. He has a love-hate relationship with Askeladd, who he hates for killing his father, but also admires for his cunning and skill. Askeladd often manipulates and taunts Thorfinn, but also sees him as a potential successor and a worthy opponent. He also gives Thorfinn some valuable lessons and insights about life and war.
Thorfinn’s personality undergoes a change throughout the story. He starts as a naive and innocent child who dreams of going to Vinland, a mythical land of peace and freedom. He then becomes a bitter and angry youth who only lives for revenge. He gradually loses his humanity and compassion, becoming more like a beast than a man. He also loses his faith and hope, believing that there is no such thing as Vinland or a true warrior. He finally reaches a breaking point when he confronts Askeladd for the last time and realizes that his revenge is meaningless and empty. He then decides to abandon his hatred and violence, and to pursue a new path of redemption and forgiveness. He also regains his interest and curiosity in Vinland, and vows to find it and create a new world there.
Thorfinn’s personality is a reflection of the themes and messages of the anime Vinland Saga. He represents the cycle of violence that plagues the Viking world, where war, death, and revenge are the norm. He also represents the quest for identity that many characters face, as they struggle to find their purpose and place in life. He also represents the possibility of change that exists in every human being, as he learns to overcome his past and his flaws, and to grow as a person and a warrior. He also represents the vision of peace that the anime Vinland Saga offers, as he seeks to discover and create Vinland, a land where people can live in harmony and happiness.
