Ryota Suzui is a second-year student who becomes a housepet, a derogatory term for the indebted students who are treated as slaves by the rest of the school, after losing a poker game to Mary Saotome, a ruthless gambler and his classmate. He is saved from his miserable fate by Yumeko Jabami, a mysterious transfer student who loves gambling for the thrill of it, and becomes her first friend and ally in the academy.

Ryota Suzui's Personality

Ryota is a kind, friendly, and loyal person, but also timid, insecure, and cautious. He is not very confident in his own abilities and prefers to avoid gambling as much as possible, as he fears losing and becoming a housepet again.
Ryota comes from a humble background, unlike most of the students in the academy. His family runs a bakery business, which is hinted by the bell-shaped pendant he wears around his neck. He is not interested in money or power, but rather in having a normal and peaceful life.
Ryota's personality is shaped by his experiences in the academy, where he witnesses the cruel and twisted nature of gambling and the people who are obsessed with it. He is often shocked and disgusted by the extreme risks and consequences that the gamblers face, such as losing their fingernails, their freedom, or even their lives.
Ryota is also influenced by his friendship with Yumeko, who is the opposite of him in many ways. He is also fascinated and intrigued by her gambling style and personality. He often worries about her, as she takes huge risks and stakes, and tries to protect her from harm. He supports her in her gambles, and sometimes participates as well. He shares a strong bond with her, and respects her choices and wishes.
  • Mary Saotome: Ryota's former tormentor and current friend. He initially despises her for making him a housepet, and fears her for her cold and ruthless attitude. He is surprised and confused when she loses to Yumeko, and becomes a housepet herself. He later befriends her, after seeing her change and grow as a person and a gambler. He helps her in her gambles, and sometimes teams up with her. He respects her for her intelligence and skill, and appreciates her for her honesty and loyalty.
  • Itsuki Sumeragi: Ryota's classmate and the daughter of the president of a toy company. He is wary of her, as she is a member of the student council and a cunning gambler. He later sees her redeem herself, after being inspired by Yumeko, and becomes more friendly with her. He acknowledges her for her passion and talent, and sometimes cooperates with her.
  • Kirari Momobami: Ryota's enemy and the student council president. He is terrified of her, as she is the most powerful and influential person in the academy, and the one who created the gambling system that oppresses the housepets. He is also disgusted by her, as she is a sadistic and manipulative gambler, who enjoys playing with people's lives. He challenges her in a gamble, along with Yumeko, and defies her by choosing his own fate. He opposes her for her tyranny and cruelty, and hopes to change the academy for the better.
