Monkey D. Luffy, also known as “Straw Hat Luffy” and commonly as “Straw Hat”, is the founder and captain of the increasingly infamous and powerful Straw Hat Pirates, as well as the most powerful of its top fighters. He desires to find the legendary treasure left behind by the late Gol D. Roger and thereby become the Pirate King, which would help facilitate an unknown dream of his that he has told only to Shanks, his brothers, and crew. He believes that being the Pirate King means having the most freedom in the world.
Monkey D. Luffy's Personality
Luffy is a cheerful, adventurous, optimistic, and loyal person who values his friends and family above all else. He is fearless, confident, and determined, often acting on his instincts and emotions rather than logic or reason. He is also very naive, simple-minded, and gullible, easily falling for lies and tricks, and often misunderstanding situations and people. He has a strong sense of justice and morality, and will not hesitate to stand up for those who are oppressed or wronged. He is also very forgiving and generous, willing to help anyone in need, even his enemies. He has a voracious appetite and loves meat, especially when cooked by his crewmate Sanji. He hates vegetables, milk, and anything spicy. He is also very fond of his straw hat, which was given to him by his idol and mentor, Red-Haired Shanks, and considers it his most precious possession.
Luffy was born in Foosha Village, a small and peaceful island in the East Blue. He is the son of Monkey D. Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army, and the grandson of Monkey D. Garp, a vice-admiral of the Navy. However, he did not know about his father’s identity until much later in his life, and he was raised by his grandfather and the bandits of the Dadan Family. He also befriended two boys, Portgas D. Ace and Sabo, who became his sworn brothers. Luffy’s personality was largely influenced by his childhood experiences, such as his admiration for Shanks and his pirates, his bond with his brothers, and his encounter with the mountain bandit Higuma, who tried to kill him.
At age 7, Luffy accidentally ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that turned his body into rubber, granting him the ability to stretch and manipulate his limbs and organs. This also made him immune to blunt force attacks, but vulnerable to sharp objects and electricity. He also became unable to swim, as all Devil Fruit users are cursed by the sea. Luffy was initially unaware of the consequences of eating the fruit, and was fascinated by his new powers. He decided to use them to become a pirate, inspired by Shanks, who also gave him his straw hat as a symbol of their promise to meet again someday after he became a great pirate.
Luffy began his pirate journey at age 17, sailing from the East Blue to the Grand Line in search of the One Piece. Along the way, he recruited several crewmates who shared his dream or had their own goals, forming the Straw Hat Pirates. He also made many friends and allies, as well as enemies and rivals, in various islands and seas. He faced many challenges and dangers, such as the Seven Warlords of the Sea, the Four Emperors, the World Government, and the Navy. He also learned more about the history and mysteries of the world, such as the Void Century, the Ancient Weapons, and the Will of D. He also discovered his father’s and brother’s identities, and was involved in the events of the Summit War, where he witnessed Ace’s death and his own execution.
Luffy’s personality underwent some changes after the Summit War, where he suffered his greatest loss and trauma. He realized that he was not strong enough to protect his friends and family, and decided to train for two years under the guidance of Silvers Rayleigh, one of Roger’s former crewmates. He also learned how to use Haki, a mysterious power that allows him to sense, intimidate, and manipulate others. He also became more mature, cautious, and strategic, but still retained his cheerful and adventurous nature. He also became more determined to fulfill his promise to his crew, his brothers, and Shanks, and to achieve his dream of becoming the Pirate King.
Luffy resumed his pirate journey after the two-year timeskip, reuniting with his crew and heading to the New World, the second half of the Grand Line. He also became more infamous and powerful, earning the recognition and respect of many influential figures, such as the Four Emperors, the Navy, and the Revolutionary Army. He also became more involved in the affairs of the world, such as the Dressrosa Incident, the Zou Incident, the Whole Cake Island Incident, and the Wano Country Incident. He also learned more about his heritage, such as his connection to Joy Boy, the ancient hero who left behind the One Piece and the promise to the Fish-Man Island. He also developed new forms and techniques, such as Gear Fourth and Snakeman, to overcome stronger opponents. He also became more aware of his role and responsibility as a pirate captain, and formed alliances with other pirate crews, forming the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
Relationships
- Shanks: Luffy’s idol and mentor, who inspired him to become a pirate and gave him his straw hat. Luffy respects and admires Shanks, and considers him a friend and a rival. He also promised to return the hat to him after he became a great pirate. Luffy has not seen Shanks since he left Foosha Village, but he hopes to meet him again someday and show him his achievements.
- Portgas D. Ace: Luffy’s older sworn brother, who was the son of Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. Luffy loved and looked up to Ace, and considered him his family. He also shared his dream of becoming the Pirate King, and supported him in his journey. Luffy was devastated by Ace’s death, and vowed to never let anyone die for him again.
- Sabo: Luffy’s older sworn brother, who is the chief of staff of the Revolutionary Army. Luffy cared and respected Sabo, and considered him his family. He also shared his dream of becoming a pirate, and was happy to see him alive after he was presumed dead. Luffy was overjoyed to reunite with Sabo, and entrusted him with Ace’s will and Devil Fruit.
- Monkey D. Garp: Luffy’s grandfather, who is a vice-admiral of the Navy. Luffy has a complicated relationship with Garp, who raised him and trained him to become a strong fighter. Luffy respects and loves Garp, but also resents him for his harsh methods and his opposition to his pirate career. Luffy also does not hesitate to fight him if he stands in his way, but still considers him his family.
- Monkey D. Dragon: Luffy’s father, who is the leader of the Revolutionary Army. Luffy does not know much about Dragon, and does not seem to care about his identity or his actions. Luffy is curious and indifferent about Dragon, but also respects him for his strength and his ideals. Luffy also does not mind being his son, and hopes to meet him someday.
