Usopp is the sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates, a group of pirates led by Monkey D. Luffy, who are on a quest to find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the King of the Pirates. Usopp is the fourth member to join the crew and the third officially after the confrontation they had with Captain Kuro. His dream is to become a brave warrior of the sea just like his father Yasopp, who is a member of the Red-Haired Pirates of “Red-Haired” Shanks.
Usopp's Personality
Usopp is a liar, a sniper, and a dreamer. He is known for his long nose, which is a reference to Pinocchio, a wooden boy who lied a lot. He often tells tall tales and exaggerates his own abilities and achievements, sometimes to impress others, sometimes to escape from danger, and sometimes to cope with his own fears and insecurities. He is also a skilled inventor, painter, and sculptor, who can create various kinds of ammunition and gadgets for his slingshot, which is his main weapon. He has a great sense of humor and can make jokes even in dire situations. He is loyal to his friends and will do anything to protect them, even if it means putting himself in harm’s way. He is also very compassionate and empathetic, as he can relate to the struggles and dreams of others.
Usopp was born and raised in Syrup Village, a peaceful island in the East Blue. His father, Yasopp, left him and his mother, Banchina, when he was a child to join the Red-Haired Pirates. Usopp admired his father and wanted to follow in his footsteps, but he also resented him for abandoning his family. His mother died from an illness when he was still young, leaving him alone and lonely. He coped with his loss by telling stories and lies to the villagers, pretending to be a brave pirate captain. He also formed his own pirate crew, the Usopp Pirates, consisting of three young children: Kaya, a wealthy girl who was his best friend; and Ninjin, Piiman, and Tamanegi, three boys who looked up to him. He would often visit Kaya’s mansion and tell her stories to cheer her up, as she was also lonely and sickly.
One day, he met Luffy, Zoro, and Nami, who arrived at the island in search of a ship. He befriended them and helped them fight against Kuro, a former pirate captain who planned to kill Kaya and take her inheritance. He also learned that his father was a friend of Shanks, Luffy’s idol and mentor. He was inspired by Luffy’s courage and determination, and decided to join his crew as their sniper. He also received a farewell gift from Kaya: the Going Merry, a small but sturdy ship that would serve as the Straw Hats’ first vessel. He bid farewell to his friends and set sail for the Grand Line, the most dangerous and adventurous sea in the world.
During his journey with the Straw Hats, Usopp faced many challenges and enemies, such as the fish-man Arlong, the god-like Enel, and the tyrant Crocodile. He also met many allies and friends, such as the giants Dorry and Brogy, the sky islanders, and the Franky Family. He developed his skills and abilities as a sniper, using his slingshot and his inventions to fight and support his crew. He also learned to overcome his fears and doubts, and to stand up for his beliefs and ideals. He had many memorable moments, such as dueling with his father’s rival, Van Augur, the sniper of the Blackbeard Pirates; sniping the World Government flag at Enies Lobby, declaring war on the world’s most powerful organization; and creating his alter-ego, Sogeking, the King of Snipers, a masked hero who helped the Straw Hats rescue their friend Nico Robin.
However, he also had some conflicts and hardships, such as being defeated and humiliated by the Franky Family, who stole his money and damaged the Going Merry; arguing with Luffy over whether to repair or abandon the ship, which resulted in a duel and his temporary departure from the crew; and being manipulated by Perona, a ghost princess who used her powers to make him lose his will to fight. He also suffered from an inferiority complex, feeling that he was the weakest and most useless member of the crew, and that he could not keep up with their growth and achievements. He often doubted his own worth and role, and wondered if he could fulfill his dream of becoming a brave warrior of the sea.
Despite his flaws and struggles, Usopp never gave up on his friends and his dream. He eventually reconciled with Luffy and rejoined the crew, after helping them defeat the CP9, a group of elite assassins who worked for the World Government. He also apologized to the Going Merry, who spoke to him and the crew before sinking, thanking them for their adventures and memories. He then welcomed a new ship, the Thousand Sunny, which was built by Franky, a cyborg shipwright who became the eighth member of the Straw Hats. He also received a bounty of 30,000,000 berries under his Sogeking persona, after the incident at Enies Lobby.
After entering the New World, the second half of the Grand Line, Usopp faced even more dangers and enemies, such as the fish-man Hody Jones, who tried to destroy Fish-Man Island; Caesar Clown, a mad scientist who experimented on children and created weapons of mass destruction; and Donquixote Doflamingo, a former celestial dragon and warlord who ruled over Dressrosa with an iron fist. He also met more allies and friends, such as the mermaid princess Shirahoshi, who had the power to control the Sea Kings; the samurai Kin’emon and Momonosuke, who were from the Wano Country, a land of samurai and ninjas; and the Tontatta Tribe, a race of dwarves who lived under Dressrosa. He improved his skills and abilities as a sniper, using a new slingshot, the Kabuto, and a new type of ammunition, the Pop Greens, which were seeds that could grow into various plants and animals. He also awakened his Observation Haki, a form of spiritual energy that allowed him to sense the presence and movements of others. He used this power to snipe Sugar, a member of Doflamingo’s crew who had the ability to turn people into toys, and free thousands of people from her curse. He also gained a new epithet, “God” Usopp, after the people he saved worshiped him as their savior. He also received a new bounty of 200,000,000 berries under his own name, after the Dressrosa incident.
