Sanji is the chain-smoking chef of the Straw Hat Pirates, a group of adventurers who sail the seas in search of the legendary treasure One Piece. He is the fifth member and the fourth to join the crew, after being recruited by the captain Monkey D. Luffy at the Baratie restaurant. He is also a former prince of the Germa Kingdom, a militaristic nation that genetically engineered its royal children to be emotionless super-soldiers. Sanji rejected his family and their ideals, and instead pursued his dream of finding the All Blue, a mythical sea where all the fish from the four oceans gather.

Sanji's Personality

Sanji is a chivalrous, passionate, and loyal cook who values his friends and his culinary skills above all else. He is always ready to help those in need, especially if they are beautiful women, whom he treats with utmost respect and admiration. He is also very proud of his cooking and considers it an art form that should not be wasted or disrespected. He often clashes with his crewmates over food-related matters, such as when Luffy eats too much or Zoro drinks too much. He is also very protective of the food supplies and the kitchen, and will not hesitate to fight anyone who tries to harm them.
Sanji’s personality is largely shaped by his past experiences, both traumatic and inspirational. He was born as the third son of the Vinsmoke Family, a powerful and ruthless dynasty that ruled over the Germa Kingdom. His father, Vinsmoke Judge, was a brilliant scientist who experimented on his children to enhance their physical and mental abilities, and erase their emotions. However, Sanji was a failure in his father’s eyes, as he retained his normal human feelings and weaknesses. He was constantly abused and neglected by his father and his brothers, who mocked him for being a runt and a failure. The only person who cared for him was his mother, Vinsmoke Sora, who secretly took a drug to prevent the genetic modifications on her unborn child. However, the drug also poisoned her and eventually killed her, leaving Sanji alone and miserable.
Sanji’s life changed when he met a legendary pirate named Red-Leg Zeff, who attacked the cruise ship that Sanji was on. Zeff was a former chef who had traveled the Grand Line, the most dangerous and unpredictable sea in the world, and claimed to have seen the All Blue. Sanji was fascinated by Zeff’s stories and expressed his desire to see the All Blue for himself. However, a storm hit the ship and caused it to sink, and Sanji and Zeff were stranded on a deserted island with little food. Zeff sacrificed his own leg to save Sanji from drowning, and gave him all the food he had, while he himself survived on a bag of treasure. After 85 days of starvation, they were finally rescued by a passing ship. Sanji was shocked to learn that Zeff had eaten his own leg to survive, and was deeply moved by his sacrifice. He decided to follow Zeff’s footsteps and become a cook, and swore to never waste food again. He also promised to fulfill his dream of finding the All Blue and show it to Zeff.
Sanji joined Zeff as his apprentice at the Baratie, a floating restaurant that Zeff founded with the treasure he had. He learned the art of cooking from Zeff and the other chefs, and developed his own fighting style that used only his legs, in order to preserve his hands for cooking. He also inherited Zeff’s sense of chivalry and compassion, and often helped the poor and the hungry, even if it meant getting into trouble. He also developed a strong attraction to women, and flirted with every female customer he saw. He became known as “Black Leg” Sanji, a skilled cook and fighter who could kick with incredible speed and power.
Sanji’s life changed again when he met Monkey D. Luffy, a young and reckless pirate who came to the Baratie looking for a cook to join his crew. Sanji initially refused, as he was loyal to Zeff and the Baratie, and did not want to leave them. However, he was impressed by Luffy’s determination and courage, and his ability to make friends with anyone. He also learned that Luffy was the son of Monkey D. Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army that opposed the World Government, the same organization that supported the Germa Kingdom. Sanji felt a connection to Luffy, as they both had fathers who were enemies of the world. He also saw a chance to fulfill his dream of finding the All Blue, as Luffy was heading to the Grand Line, where the All Blue was rumored to exist. He decided to join Luffy’s crew, after Zeff encouraged him to follow his own path. He also received a farewell gift from Zeff: a pair of black shoes that Zeff had worn when he was a pirate. Sanji was touched by Zeff’s gesture, and vowed to return to the Baratie someday and show him the All Blue.
Sanji became the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates, and quickly formed bonds with his new crewmates. He respected Luffy as his captain, and often acted as his advisor and strategist. He admired Zoro as his rival, and often competed with him in strength and bounties. He cared for Nami as his navigator, and often showered her with affection and gifts. He respected Usopp as his sniper, and often supported him in his lies and inventions. He adored Robin as his archaeologist, and often praised her beauty and intelligence. He trusted Chopper as his doctor, and often fed him with his delicious food. He liked Franky as his shipwright, and often collaborated with him in his inventions. He loved Brook as his musician, and often sang and danced with him. He also developed a habit of giving nicknames to his crewmates, such as calling Luffy “mugiwara” (straw hat), Zoro “marimo” (moss head), Usopp “long nose”, Chopper “little guy”, Franky “cyborg”, and Brook “skeleton”.
Sanji’s personality also evolved as he faced various challenges and enemies along his journey. He learned to overcome his fear of spiders and insects, after encountering them in the forests of Little Garden and Green Bit. He learned to control his lust, after being trapped in the Kamabakka Kingdom, a land of cross-dressing okamas who tried to convert him into one of them. He learned to cope with his past, after being forced to confront his family and their schemes, and being betrayed by his crush Pudding. He learned to trust his friends, after being rescued by Luffy and the others from Big Mom’s clutches, and being forgiven for his actions. He learned to accept his heritage, after discovering the truth about his mother and receiving a raid suit from his sister. He learned to embrace his dreams, after witnessing the All Blue in the Fish-Man Island, and reaching the end of the Grand Line in Laugh Tale.
