Garou is a martial arts prodigy, the self-proclaimed “Hero Hunter”, and a major adversary of the Hero Association and Monster Association. He is a disciple of Bang and was once expelled from his dojo for going on a rampage. Because of his fascination with monsters, he is commonly called the “Human Monster”. He aims to become the world’s first God Level Threat and create a scenario where the entire humanity unites against him.
Garou's Personality
Garou is a rebellious, ruthless, arrogant, and ambitious character who despises the popular and the powerful. He is driven by a twisted sense of justice that stems from his childhood trauma of being bullied and discriminated by his peers. He believes that the world is unfair and that heroes are hypocrites who only care about fame and glory. He wants to prove himself as the strongest being and overthrow the established order of society.
Garou’s origins are shrouded in mystery, but it is known that he was a talented student of Bang, the third-ranked S-Class hero and the master of the Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist. Garou admired Bang and wanted to learn from him, but he also felt dissatisfied with the rigid and disciplined training. He developed a rebellious attitude and started to challenge other martial arts schools, eventually attacking his own dojo and injuring many of his fellow students. Bang was forced to expel him and disown him as his disciple.
Garou’s life changed when he witnessed the battle between Saitama and Boros, the leader of the Dark Matter Thieves who invaded Earth. Garou was awed by the power and ferocity of Boros, who was able to fight on par with Saitama, the strongest hero. Garou decided to emulate Boros and become a monster, a being that transcends the limits of humanity and challenges the status quo. He began his mission of hunting down heroes, starting from the lowest-ranked ones and gradually moving up the ladder. He also killed any monster that crossed his path, especially those who harmed innocent people or lacked the spirit of a true monster.
Garou’s personality evolved as he fought more heroes and monsters. He became more confident, cunning, and adaptable, learning new techniques and skills from his opponents and improving his physical abilities. He also developed a sense of respect and compassion for some of his foes, such as Mumen Rider, Metal Bat, and Tareo, a young boy who befriended him. He even saved Tareo from the Monster Association, a group of powerful monsters who kidnapped him and tried to recruit Garou. Garou refused to join them, as he did not share their goal of destroying humanity. He also realized that he was not a true monster, as he still had a human heart and emotions.
Garou’s personality reached its peak when he underwent a monstrous transformation, triggered by his near-death experience at the hands of the S-Class heroes and Genos, the cyborg disciple of Saitama. Garou’s body mutated into a grotesque and powerful form, resembling a wolf-like creature with horns, wings, and claws. He also gained new abilities, such as flight, energy projection, and time travel. He declared himself as the God Level Threat and the ultimate monster, and proceeded to fight the remaining heroes, including Bang and his brother Bomb. He easily defeated them all, except for Saitama, who arrived at the scene and challenged him.
Garou’s personality collapsed when he faced Saitama, who proved to be far superior to him in every aspect. Saitama exposed Garou’s hypocrisy and insecurity, revealing that he was not a monster, but a human who played the role of a villain. Saitama also pointed out that Garou’s actions were not motivated by justice, but by selfishness and boredom. He accused Garou of being a child who threw a tantrum and ran away from his problems, rather than facing them and growing up. Garou was shocked and enraged by Saitama’s words, and tried to deny them, but he could not overcome Saitama’s overwhelming strength and will. He eventually admitted his defeat and fled, leaving behind his monstrous form and his twisted ideals.
Relationships
Bang: Garou’s former master and the closest thing he had to a father figure. Garou respected and feared Bang, but also resented him for his strictness and his adherence to the hero system. Bang cared for Garou and tried to guide him, but he also felt disappointed and angry with him for his betrayal and his violence. Bang was willing to kill Garou if he became a threat to humanity, but he also hoped that he would redeem himself and return to his side.
Saitama: Garou’s ultimate nemesis and the only one who could defeat him. Garou initially underestimated Saitama, thinking that he was a weak and bald hero. He later realized that Saitama was the strongest being in the world, and the one who could give him the challenge he sought. Garou admired and hated Saitama, and wanted to surpass him and prove him wrong. Saitama, on the other hand, was indifferent and bored with Garou, and saw him as a misguided and immature person. Saitama defeated Garou not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally, forcing him to face his true self and his flaws.
Tareo: Garou’s only friend and the one who awakened his humanity. Tareo was a timid and bullied boy who idolized Garou as a hero, despite his villainous reputation. He followed Garou and witnessed his battles, and even gave him a book about monsters that inspired him. Garou protected Tareo from the Monster Association, and showed him kindness and compassion. Tareo helped Garou to remember his childhood dreams and his human side, and encouraged him to stop his rampage and find a better way to live.
