Levi Ackermann is a captain in the Survey Corps, a military branch that fights against the Titans, giant humanoid creatures that devour humans. He is widely regarded as humanity’s strongest soldier, and is the leader of the Special Operations Squad, a group of elite soldiers hand-picked by him.

Levi Ackermann's Personality

Levi is a character, who has undergone several changes throughout his life. He has a cold, blunt, and pragmatic personality, often speaking harshly and honestly to others, regardless of their rank or status. He is not easily impressed or intimidated by anyone, and he does not hesitate to express his disdain or contempt for those he dislikes or disagrees with. He is also a germaphobe, who values cleanliness and order, and dislikes dirt and mess. He is often seen cleaning his surroundings or scolding his subordinates for their lack of hygiene. He has a dry and sarcastic sense of humor, and sometimes makes jokes or insults at the expense of others, especially his enemies or rivals.
Levi’s personality is largely shaped by his harsh and tragic past. He was born and raised in the Underground, a crime-ridden and impoverished area below the capital city, where he lived with his mother, a prostitute, until she died of an illness when he was young. He then met and was taken in by Kenny Ackermann, his maternal uncle, who taught him how to survive and fight in the Underground. Levi became a notorious thug and criminal, who worked for various gangs and organizations, and earned a reputation as a ruthless and skilled killer. He had no loyalty or attachment to anyone, except for Kenny, who he considered his only family.
However, Levi’s life changed when he encountered Erwin Smith, the commander of the Survey Corps, who offered him a chance to join the military and see the outside world. Levi initially refused, but after witnessing the death of his friends and comrades, who were killed by the Military Police for stealing a document related to the secrets of the Walls, he decided to follow Erwin and become a soldier. He then dedicated his life to the Survey Corps, and developed a strong respect and trust for Erwin, who he saw as a visionary and a leader. He also formed a close bond with his squad members, who he regarded as his new family, and vowed to protect them from the Titans and other threats.
Levi is a loyal and devoted soldier, who follows the orders and ideals of the Survey Corps, even if they are risky or controversial. He is willing to sacrifice his own life and happiness for the sake of humanity’s survival and freedom, and he expects the same from his subordinates and allies. He is also a pragmatic and realistic leader, who does not let his emotions or personal feelings interfere with his decisions or actions. He is aware of the harsh and cruel nature of the world he lives in, and he does not shy away from killing or torturing his enemies, if necessary. He is also prepared to accept the consequences of his actions, and he does not regret or apologize for them.
However, Levi is not a heartless or emotionless person, as he does have a softer and more compassionate side, which he rarely shows to others. He cares deeply for his friends and comrades, and he suffers greatly when they are hurt or killed. He is also capable of showing kindness and empathy to those who are in pain or need, such as Eren Yeager, the male protagonist of the series, who he takes under his wing as both his mentor and guardian, or Historia Reiss, the true heir of the royal family, who he encourages to live for herself and not for others. He also has a sense of justice and morality, and he does not tolerate injustice or corruption, such as the tyranny of the royal government, or the oppression of the Eldians by the Marleyans. He is also willing to change his views and opinions, if he is proven wrong or if he learns new information, such as the truth about the Titans and the history of the world.

He is devastated when Erwin dies, and he honors his memory by continuing his legacy.

He also sees Eren as a key to humanity’s survival and freedom, and he entrusts him with the responsibility of using his power wisely. He often clashes with Mikasa over Eren’s safety and well-being, and he does not hesitate to scold her or restrain her when she acts recklessly or emotionally. He later reunites with Kenny, who is working for the royal government, and they engage in a deadly and personal fight. He learns that Kenny was his mother’s brother, and that he was part of a secret branch of the Military Police, who were tasked with hunting down and killing the members of the Ackermann clan. He also learns that Kenny had a dream of becoming the king, and that he was influenced by Uri Reiss, the previous holder of the Founding Titan. He ultimately defeats and injures Kenny, who dies in his arms. He inherits Kenny’s Titan serum, and he listens to his final words, which reveal his true feelings and motives. He then mourns Kenny’s death, and he acknowledges him as his family.
