Ymir is is a graduate of the 104th Training Corps and a former member of the Scout Regiment. She also has the ability to transform into the Jaw Titan, one of the Nine Titans that possess special powers.

Ymir's Personality

Ymir can be seen as selfish, cynical, blunt, sarcastic, and ruthless, but also loyal, compassionate, honest, and selfless. She is driven by her own survival and freedom, but also by her love and devotion to Historia. She is not afraid to speak her mind and challenge authority, but also respects strength and courage. She is willing to kill and betray others for her own benefit, but also to sacrifice herself for the sake of those she cares about.
Ymir’s personality is shaped by her tragic and traumatic past, which is revealed in flashbacks throughout the series. She was born in Marley, a nation that oppressed and persecuted the Eldians, the descendants of Ymir Fritz, the first Titan. She was taken in by a cult that worshipped Ymir Fritz and claimed that she was her reincarnation. She was given the name Ymir and treated as a goddess by the cult members, who gave her love and respect that she never had before. However, she was also exploited and manipulated by the cult leader, who used her as a tool to gain followers and money.
Ymir’s life changed when the cult was exposed and arrested by the Marleyan authorities. She was branded as a heretic and a traitor, and sentenced to be turned into a mindless Titan as a punishment. She was injected with Titan spinal fluid and pushed off a wall, where she transformed into a monstrous creature. She wandered the land outside the Walls for 60 years, losing her humanity and memories, until she encountered Reiner Braun, Bertolt Hoover, and Marcel Galliard, three Marleyan warriors who possessed the Armored, Colossal, and Jaw Titans, respectively. She attacked them and devoured Marcel, inheriting his Jaw Titan power and regaining her human form and consciousness.
Ymir’s second chance at life made her value her freedom and survival above all else. She decided to live for herself and do whatever she wanted, without caring about the consequences. She joined the 104th Training Corps, where she met Historia, who was hiding her true identity as the illegitimate daughter of Rod Reiss, the king of the Walls. Ymir recognized Historia’s situation and decided to help her, feeling a connection with her as a fellow outcast and liar. She encouraged Historia to be herself and not to live for others’ expectations. She also developed romantic feelings for Historia, which she confessed later on.
Ymir’s personality was tested when the truth about her past and her Titan power was revealed. She was forced to choose between staying with Historia and the Scouts, or joining Reiner and Bertolt, who were revealed to be the enemies who broke the Walls and caused the death of many people. Ymir initially chose to side with Reiner and Bertolt, hoping to find answers and a way to survive in the outside world. She also wanted to repay her debt to Reiner for saving her from a mindless Titan, and to Marcel for giving her his power. However, she soon realized that she had made a mistake, and that she belonged with Historia and the Scouts. She decided to return to them and fight against the Marleyan forces, even though she knew it was a hopeless and suicidal mission. She ultimately gave up her life and her power to Porco Galliard, Marcel’s younger brother, who inherited the Jaw Titan from her.

Relationships

  • Historia Reiss: Ymir’s lover and the most important person in her life. Ymir was deeply devoted to Historia, and wanted to make her happy and proud. She was also protective of her, and willing to sacrifice herself for her. Ymir was the only person who knew Historia’s true self, and accepted her unconditionally. Historia was also the only person who knew Ymir’s true self, and loved her sincerely. Ymir’s letter to Historia was her final confession and farewell, and Historia’s response was her final acceptance and gratitude.
  • Reiner Braun: Ymir’s former enemy and ally. Ymir had a complicated relationship with Reiner, who was both the reason for her salvation and the cause of her suffering. Ymir hated Reiner for his role in the destruction of the Walls and the death of many people, but she also sympathized with him for his guilt and his split personality. Ymir owed Reiner for giving her back her human form, but she also blamed him for taking away her freedom. Ymir ultimately chose to follow Reiner and return to Marley, as a way of repaying her debt and ending her curse.
  • Bertolt Hoover: Ymir’s former enemy and ally. Ymir had a simpler relationship with Bertolt, who was more honest and straightforward than Reiner. Ymir respected Bertolt for his loyalty and his courage, but she also mocked him for his cowardice and his indecisiveness. Ymir helped Bertolt escape from the Survey Corps, but she also threatened him to reveal his secrets. Ymir joined Bertolt and returned to Marley, as a way of honoring his friendship and fulfilling his mission.
  • Marcel Galliard: Ymir’s former victim and predecessor. Ymir had a brief but fateful encounter with Marcel, who was the previous holder of the Jaw Titan. Ymir ate Marcel and inherited his power, which gave her back her human form and her memories. Ymir felt guilty and remorseful for killing Marcel, but she also felt grateful and curious about him. Ymir learned about Marcel’s life and his personality from his memories, and she tried to live up to his legacy.
  • Porco Galliard: Ymir’s successor and enemy. Ymir had a hostile and antagonistic relationship with Porco, who was Marcel’s younger brother and the next holder of the Jaw Titan. Ymir was captured and eaten by Porco, who inherited her power and her memories. Ymir despised Porco for his arrogance and his ignorance, but she also pitied him for his inferiority and his jealousy. Ymir gave Porco a glimpse of her life and her personality through her memories, and she hoped that he would understand her better.
