Suzaku Kururugi is the son of Japan’s last prime minister, Genbu Kururugi, and the childhood friend of Lelouch and Nunnally. He is an Honorary Britannian soldier and a Knightmare pilot who fights for the Holy Britannian Empire. He later becomes one of the Knights of the Round, the elite knights of the emperor, and the Knight of Zero, the personal knight of Lelouch.
Suzaku Kururugi Personality
Suzaku is a conflicted character who struggles with his ideals and actions throughout the series. He is generally kind, compassionate, loyal, and courageous, but he also has a dark side that is driven by guilt, anger, and self-loathing. He values life and peace above all else, and he believes that the ends do not justify the means. He tries to change the world from within the system, rather than resorting to violence and rebellion. He is often seen as a traitor by his fellow Japanese, who resent him for siding with their oppressors. He is also seen as a hypocrite by some of his Britannian allies, who doubt his loyalty and question his motives.
Suzaku’s personality is largely shaped by his past, especially by the traumatic event of killing his own father when he was a child. He did this in the hope of ending the war between Japan and Britannia, but instead, he paved the way for Japan’s surrender and colonization. He was spared from execution by the intervention of Lelouch’s mother, Marianne vi Britannia, who used her Geass power to alter his memories and implant a subconscious command to live. This command would activate whenever Suzaku was in mortal danger, forcing him to survive at any cost. Suzaku grew up with a deep sense of guilt and regret over his father’s death, and he sought to atone for his sin by dedicating his life to the military. He also developed a death wish, constantly putting himself in harm’s way and hoping to die a heroic death.
Suzaku’s personality is also influenced by his friendship with Lelouch, whom he met when they were both living in the Kururugi residence as part of a diplomatic exchange. They initially disliked each other, but they soon became close friends and shared their dreams and secrets. They were separated when Britannia invaded Japan, and they did not meet again until seven years later, when they found themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. Suzaku was shocked and betrayed when he discovered that Lelouch was the mysterious rebel leader Zero, who was leading the Black Knights against Britannia. He felt that Lelouch was using his Geass power to manipulate people and create chaos, and he vowed to stop him and bring him to justice. However, he also still cared for Lelouch as a friend, and he tried to persuade him to abandon his path of revenge and join him in creating a peaceful world.
Suzaku’s personality undergoes several changes throughout the series, as he faces various challenges and dilemmas. He becomes more cynical and ruthless, as he realizes that his idealistic approach is not enough to change the world. He also becomes more conflicted and confused, as he learns more about the truth behind the war and the Geass. He is forced to make difficult choices and sacrifices, such as killing his beloved princess Euphemia li Britannia, who was under the influence of Lelouch’s accidental Geass command, or firing the F.L.E.I.J.A. warhead, which destroyed a large part of Tokyo and killed millions of people. He also suffers from the consequences of his actions, such as being hated and feared by both the Japanese and the Britannians, or being betrayed and manipulated by his superiors and enemies. He eventually abandons his original belief that the ends do not justify the means, and he decides to achieve his goals by any means necessary. He joins forces with Lelouch, who has become the new Emperor of Britannia, and they execute the Zero Requiem plan, which involves Lelouch becoming the most hated tyrant in the world and Suzaku killing him as Zero, the symbol of justice and hope. Suzaku hopes that by doing this, they can create a peaceful and united world, and also end their own suffering.
