Giyu Tomioka is a major supporting character of the anime and manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Water Hashira, one of the nine strongest swordsmen in the organization. He is the first Demon Slayer that Tanjiro Kamado encounters and the one who spares his sister Nezuko Kamado after she becomes a demon.
Giyu Tomioka's Personality
Giyu is a stoic and serious figure who frequently gives off an impression of being cold and distant. He has a reserved personality and a strong sense of justice with no tolerance towards those who don’t know their own limitations and throw away their lives. He is a man of very few words and has trouble interacting with others, so he usually keeps himself at a distance. Giyu suffers from an inferiority complex which he developed since his participation in the final selection, where he was the only survivor among his peers. He blames himself for not being able to save his friends and his sister, and often questions his own worth as a Hashira.
Giyu’s origins are not fully revealed, but it is known that he had an older sister named Tsutako Tomioka, who raised him after their parents died. Tsutako was a kind and gentle woman who taught Giyu how to be compassionate and empathetic. She also gave him a haori that he still wears to this day, which is split into two different patterns: one solid dark red, and one geometrically patterned with rhombi of green, orange, and yellow. Giyu loved his sister dearly and was devastated when she was killed by a demon.
Giyu decided to become a Demon Slayer after his sister’s death, and trained under Sakonji Urokodaki, the former Water Hashira. There, he met Sabito, a boy who was also training to be a Demon Slayer. Sabito was a cheerful and confident person who befriended Giyu and helped him overcome his self-doubt. He also gave him the other half of his haori, which matched the patterned side of Giyu’s. Sabito and Giyu became close friends and rivals, and promised to become Hashiras together.
However, their promise was broken when they participated in the final selection, a test that determines who can become a Demon Slayer. Sabito sacrificed himself to protect Giyu and the other candidates from a powerful demon, and Giyu was the only one who survived. Giyu was traumatized by Sabito’s death and felt guilty for not being able to save him. He also felt unworthy of becoming a Hashira, and doubted his own abilities. He became more withdrawn and isolated, and rarely smiled or showed any emotion.
Giyu’s life changed when he met Tanjiro and Nezuko, two siblings who reminded him of his own past. Giyu was initially going to kill Nezuko, who had turned into a demon, but he was moved by Tanjiro’s determination and love for his sister. He decided to spare Nezuko and give Tanjiro a chance to become a Demon Slayer and find a cure for her. He also gave Tanjiro his old mentor’s contact information, and told him to train under Urokodaki. Giyu’s encounter with Tanjiro and Nezuko sparked a change in his personality, as he began to show more care and concern for them, and even defended them from other Hashiras who wanted to kill Nezuko.
Giyu continued to support Tanjiro and his friends throughout their journey, and often helped them in their battles against demons. He also started to open up more to his fellow Hashiras, and formed bonds with some of them, such as Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, and Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira. He also learned to accept his past and his role as a Hashira, and resolved to fight for the future of humanity and his comrades. He showed his courage and determination when he faced Muzan Kibutsuji, the first and most powerful demon, and lost his right arm in the process. He survived the battle and witnessed the dawn of a new era, where demons no longer existed.
