Ryomen Sukuna is the strongest jujutsu sorcerer in history, and is known as “The King of Curses”. He was once a human who lived over a thousand years ago, but after his death, he transformed into a cursed object that split his power into twenty fingers.
Sukuna's Personality
Sukuna is a cruel, narcissistic, depraved and supremely arrogant figure who has no regard for anyone but himself. He is extremely confident in his abilities and looks down on anyone who challenges him, often mocking and taunting them before killing them. He enjoys inflicting pain and suffering on others, and takes pleasure in making things difficult for Yuji, his host. He has no morals or empathy, and will kill anyone in an instant, regardless of their affiliation or innocence. He is also very cunning and manipulative, and will use any means necessary to achieve his goals, such as making deals, lying, or betraying others.
Sukuna’s origins are shrouded in mystery, but it is known that he was a human sorcerer who lived during the Heian Era, a period of Japanese history marked by cultural and political turmoil. He was not treated as a hero nor did he have anything named after him, unlike other historical figures. He was feared and hated by both humans and curses, and was considered a calamity and a disgrace. He was also worshiped by some as a deity, but his association with demonic imagery was formed after the Imperial House of Japan declared him a vicious force of nature. His given name, Ryomen, means “two-faced”, which can be applied to his appearance and personality.
Sukuna’s life was filled with violence and conflict, as he fought against the Yamato family, the ruling clan of Japan at the time, and other jujutsu sorcerers who tried to stop him. He was so powerful that he could manipulate curses, create domains, and use reverse cursed techniques, which are abilities that only a few sorcerers can master. He also had four arms and two faces, which gave him an advantage in combat and made him more intimidating. He was eventually killed by the combined efforts of the jujutsu sorcerers of the Golden Age of Jujutsu, but not before he sealed himself as a cursed object, splitting his power into twenty fingers that were scattered across Japan.
Sukuna remained dormant for centuries, until he was awakened by Yuji Itadori, a high school student who swallowed one of his fingers as a last resort to save his friends from a curse. Sukuna took over Yuji’s body and tried to kill his friends, but Yuji managed to regain control and suppress him. Sukuna was intrigued by Yuji’s ability to resist him, and agreed to a pact that allowed him to take over Yuji’s body for one minute whenever Yuji uttered a specific word. However, Sukuna lied about the word and used the opportunity to harm Yuji’s allies and enemies whenever he could. He also made another pact with Yuji, promising to revive him after he died in exchange for letting him take over his body for one minute per finger he consumed.
Sukuna’s personality has not changed much since his reincarnation, as he still retains his sadistic and arrogant nature. He considers himself superior to everyone else, and has no interest in the affairs of the jujutsu world, unless they involve his fingers or his vessel. He is also very curious about the secrets of jujutsu, such as the true nature of the Six Eyes, the origin of the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, and the identity of the Brain. He is also amused by the antics of some of the characters, such as Gojo’s eccentricity, Mahito’s nihilism, and Geto’s betrayal. He has shown some respect for a few individuals who impressed him with their skills or courage, such as Megumi Fushiguro, Jogo, and Yuta Okkotsu, but he still considers them inferior to him and does not hesitate to kill them if they oppose him.
Relationships
Yuji Itadori: Sukuna’s current vessel and the protagonist of the series. Sukuna despises Yuji and sees him as nothing but a tool to regain his power. He often insults and threatens him, and tries to harm his friends and allies whenever he can. He also does not care about Yuji’s feelings or opinions, and will ignore or override them if they conflict with his own. However, Sukuna is also intrigued by Yuji’s ability to resist him and his potential as a jujutsu sorcerer. He has made several pacts with Yuji, but he always tries to exploit them to his advantage. He also seems to have a hidden agenda involving Yuji, as he has spared his life on several occasions and has shown interest in his connection to the Brain.
Megumi Fushiguro: A jujutsu sorcerer and one of Yuji’s closest friends. Sukuna has taken a liking to Megumi, as he recognizes his potential as a user of the Ten Shadows Technique, a rare and powerful form of jujutsu. He has praised Megumi’s skills and courage, and has encouraged him to unleash his full power. He has also saved Megumi’s life twice, once from Mahito and once from himself, but he claims that he only did so because he wants to kill him personally. He has also transferred his soul into Megumi’s body, making him his new vessel, but he has not revealed his motives for doing so.
Satoru Gojo: The strongest jujutsu sorcerer in the modern era and Yuji’s mentor. Sukuna has a rivalry with Gojo, as he considers him the only one who can match his power. He has challenged Gojo to a fight several times, but Gojo has always refused, as he knows that Sukuna is too dangerous to be unleashed. Sukuna respects Gojo’s strength and intelligence, but he also mocks his arrogance and recklessness. He has also expressed his annoyance at Gojo’s interference with his plans, and has taken advantage of his absence to wreak havoc on the jujutsu world.
